Can AI Build Your Brand’s Website?

Tools like ChatGPT Sites, Wix Harmony and Base44 can now generate a working website from a written description. Often referred to as “vibe coding,” users can chat with an AI tool to generate a site including the functionality, design and copy.

For a business owner considering the investment of a website build, that sounds appealing. Yet the question isn’t whether AI websites can be built, but whether they’re built to carry the capabilities your business truly needs.

How AI Website Builders Work

ChatGPT Sites lets users build a website or lightweight app inside a ChatGPT conversation, described in plain language and refined through back-and-forth prompts. Wix Harmony works similarly, pairing those prompts with Wix’s existing visual editor, so an AI agent (a system that carries out tasks on its own based on written instructions) can generate a page while still leaving room for manual edits. Base44, acquired by Wix in 2025, focuses more on AI-generated software and apps.

Across all three, the process looks similar:

  • Describe the business or project in a sentence or two
  • Receive a generated layout, design and starting copy
  • Refine the result through more prompts or manual edits
  • Publish on the platform’s own hosting

Where an AI-Built Site Can Make Sense

For the right project, these tools solve speed and resource problems:

  • A temporary landing page for a short-term campaign or event
  • A quick way to test a new business idea before committing to a full build
  • An internal tool, dashboard or one-off project page
  • A rough first draft to clarify direction

None of these use cases carry the weight of a site meant to represent your business for years. That’s where the tradeoffs start to show up.

The Weaknesses of AI-Generated Sites

Several areas of concern stand out with AI-built sites, and all carry significant consequences for a business.

Accessibility and legal exposure. Legal trackers reported more than 5,100 ADA web accessibility lawsuits filed across federal and state courts in 2025, a 20% increase over 2024, with filings from people suing without an attorney up 40% as AI tools make it easier to scan a site and draft a complaint. Anyone can generate a site with AI, and they typically skip the proper accessibility review conducted by a professional who knows what to look for. That gap can quickly turn into a legal problem, and it can happen to anyone.

Security and compliance. Forbes reported on research showing AI-generated code carries roughly 2.7 times more security flaws than code written by a human developer. One scan of thousands of publicly deployed AI-built sites and apps found more than 2,000 high-impact vulnerabilities and hundreds of exposed credentials. Additionally, cookie consent, a proper privacy policy and other regulatory requirements aren’t something a generated site handles on its own. For a simple one-page site, that risk may be low. For a site collecting customer information or processing payments, it’s a potential nightmare.

Search visibility. AI-generated sites often skip the SEO foundations that determine whether a site can be found, including structured data, clean site architecture and page speed. Without that foundation, an otherwise finished-looking site can go unseen in both search results and recommendations from conversational AI tools.

Strategy and brand fit. A website built without a planning phase is a lot like a house built without a blueprint, using a single handyman for every job. AI tools skip the strategy and planning process that decides how a site should be structured around actual user behavior and business goals, along with the layered expertise a full team brings: design, development, copywriting and strategy working together instead of one tool attempting to do it all. The result also tends to be generic. AI-generated design and copy pull from broad patterns rather than what makes one brand different from the next, and there’s no built-in check for whether it matches your brand guidelines.

Updates and longevity. Over the years, other people will need to work inside the website you’ve built: a new marketing hire, a developer troubleshooting an issue or a hosting vendor migrating the site to new infrastructure. A site built through human expertise, with a clear structure and documented decisions, is much easier for the next person to pick up. A site generated from a prompt often isn’t, since the reasoning behind a layout choice or a specific feature can be hard to reconstruct, even for the person who built it.

Most AI website builders also keep the site tied to their own platform, which limits how well it connects to a CRM, an online store or other tools as the business grows. Outgrowing those limits usually means a full rebuild, not an update, which costs more than building the site correctly from the start.

The Takeaway

AI website builders are a legitimate option for a narrow set of projects. They aren’t a replacement for the strategy, security, accessibility and long-term planning a brand website needs to hold up over the years, be used by multiple teams and handle whatever comes next for your business.

  • Where you once would have used a landing page tool, use AI tools for speed on short-term or low-stakes projects
  • Build your core business website with a team that plans for accessibility, security and growth from the start
  • Not sure where your site currently stands? Consider a website audit. Or ask yourself a few key questions:
    • Is my site showing up in search results and AI recommendations?
    • Is it meeting users’ needs?
    • Are users taking the actions I want them to take?

If you’re weighing a new site or wondering whether your current one holds up, our team can help you figure out what’s needed, what can wait and how to build it in a way that strengthens your business outcomes.
