How many times have you woken up in the middle of the night worrying about something? Then, tossed and turned for hours thinking about it. Never happened to you? You’ve got to be one of the lucky ones. All the time? Maybe you better see a doctor. Every now and then? Join the club.
Sure, there are plenty of things to worry about in business, and in life in general. Are big sales going to come through? Cash flow. And in our business of details, are all the pieces of our projects going to come together so we can deliver ahead of schedule and under budget? Again, there are always plenty of things you can worry about.
I’m an early riser. I like the mornings before my family is awake to read, plan the day, exercise and get an early start. But I have a rule that I will not get up before 4 am. (I know. By now you’re thinking I’m nuts, but you really ought to give it a try.) However, there have been many days when I’ve woken up in the middle of the night (yes, before 4) thinking about something, worrying about something else, then something else, etc.
Dale Carnegie suggested that you are better off to get up when he said “If you can’t sleep, then get up and do something instead of lying there and worrying. It’s the worry that gets you, not the loss of sleep.” Morning is a great time of the day to get a head start on tomorrow. It just might be the extra effort you could use to propel your business or career forward. Try it next time you wake up worrying and can’t go back to sleep. Then let me know what you think. Sweet dreams!
