What Happens if Facebook Goes Away?
I was at a CMO conference this past week for the outdoor industry and a very provocative question was posed to the group. What if Facebook goes away? Hmmm. Interesting. Do you have so much invested in building out your social media channel on Facebook that it could become disruptive to your marketing efforts if it went away? The question made me think and the point of the question was to get attendees thinking about building their own platform. In other words, owning the media.
I love that idea and the following one that anyone can be the media and everyone should be! One example was an innovative bank in Europe that had an audio/video production facility right in its bank lobby. It wasn’t a bank (even though it was). It was media that offered banking services that people loved to buy from them because they loved the bank for all the great and helpful content it produced. Anyone can be the media!
So, if you apply this concept to your own marketing efforts, you start to see the potential for what this could mean. Sure, there’s tons of content out there and growing exponentially every year. But, there’s always going to be a need (and a demand) for good quality content that people (your customers) are searching for. Educate them. Inspire them. Entertain them and motivate them to take action. You have the power. You have the control. You own the media and it’s right there on your website where you put it and control it.
